 The WIC Program’s professional nutrition staff provides the following services, all at no cost:

Supplemental Food Benefits
Monthly checks are provided so you can buy nutritious foods that will keep you and your children healthy and strong. Approved foods include:

  • Fruits and Vegetables (fresh, frozen, canned)
  • 100% juice
  • Whole wheat/whole grain foods such as 100% whole wheat bread, brown rice, soft corn or whole wheat tortillas
  • Beans, peas, lentils (canned or dried)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Canned fish (light tuna or pink salmon)
  • Milk, eggs, and cheese
  • Infant cerealsHealthy Eating Habits

Nutrition Assessment and Education
At your appointment, a WIC nutritionist will review your or your child's health history with you. You will also discuss what you and your children eat one-on-one with the nutritionist. By participating in the WIC Program you will receive valuable nutrition information and education, such as how to:

• Use WIC foods to improve health,
• Get the most from your food dollar, and
• Eat healthy during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Tips to help your child to eat well

Breastfeeding Promotion, Education and Support
Support is provided to help women feel comfortable about breastfeeding. Peer counselors give mother-to-mother counseling and advice regarding breastfeeding and they will also provide tips on how breastfeeding can work around a busy schedule. WIC provides educational resources and free breast pumps may be available for mothers who meet certain criteria.

Referrals to Health and Social Services 
An added benefit of the WIC Program is screening for other health problems and referrals to other appropriate health and social services. Referrals maybe made for Medicaid, Food Share, immunizations, and more.

 

Fit Families 
We know children do what they see, not always what they are told. Your kids will learn healthy habits from watching you – so set a good example! As a participant in the Fit Families Program you will identify family health habits you want to change and ways you can reach your goals. Your efforts to make health changes will be rewarded by incentives or prizes for your participant! A Fit Families Counselor will provide monthly contacts by phone, email, or in person to provide support as you make lifestyle changes. The Fit Families Program is for families with children between 2-4 years of age.
